Solar Heating

Heat your home with free solar energy from your SMA PV system.

Dynamic Tariffs

Optimize for electricity prices. Charge or run devices when rates are lowest, and use solar when prices are high.

Cloud Integration

No hardware required. Connect your SMA and Nibe via cloud APIs in minutes.

SMA + Nibe: TL;DR

Yes, SMA and Nibe work together in Zerofy. Zerofy reads your SMA system through SMA Sunny Portal / SMA Energy app and controls your Nibe heat pump through the Nibe cloud. Smart mode also follows dynamic electricity prices and solar forecasts. No extra hardware needed.

In practice

  • Hot water is the simplest heat store: Autopilot can use the hot-water boost of your Nibe heat pump to heat water in hours with surplus.
  • A heat pump draws roughly 1–3 kW while running, which a typical SMA home system (3–10 kW) can cover on sunny days.
  • Zerofy gets new SMA data every 5 minutes. Heat pumps shouldn’t switch often, so set a minimum runtime in Autopilot.
  • Zerofy also shows your SMA battery, so you can see whether surplus goes into the battery or into the heat pump.
  • Leave the normal hot-water comfort mode at a moderate level so the tank has headroom; a boost triggered on surplus then stores midday solar as hot water for the evening. EME 20 is not needed for this, since Zerofy reads the surplus from your inverter’s cloud.

What SMA and Nibe offer on their own

SMA: The Sunny Home Manager 2.0 runs heat pumps via EEBus (Vaillant, Wolf, NIBE S-series), SEMP (Stiebel Eltron, Tecalor, AEG) or an SG Ready input switched by a Shelly, Moxa or SMA relay. my-PV heating rods (AC ELWA, AC•Thor) are controlled via SEMP.

Nibe: NIBE’s own PV solution is the EME 20 communication module for S-series units (S1155, S1255, SMO S40, VVM S320/S325). It reads the inverter over RS485 Modbus RTU (SunSpec) and, under menu 4.2.2 “Solar electricity”, lets the heat pump raise room, hot-water or pool temperature when there is surplus; with an extra energy meter household consumption can be prioritised.

Directly, without Zerofy: NIBE S-series ground-source (S1155, S1255, S1156, S1256, S1157, S1257, S1357), air-to-water indoor units (e.g. VVM S320/S330/S500, SMO S40) and S735 exhaust-air heat pumps are controlled by the Sunny Home Manager 2.0 via EEBus.

Zerofy is the alternative if you want SMA, Nibe and your other devices in one app, with dynamic tariffs and forecast-based Smart mode.

Setting up SMA and Nibe in Zerofy

1. Connect SMA

Zerofy connects to your SMA system through the SMA Sunny Portal cloud, using your Sunny Portal login.

  1. Make sure your SMA inverter is cloud-capable and registered in Sunny Portal.
  2. Add SMA in Zerofy and log in with your Sunny Portal credentials.

Step-by-step guide for SMA

2. Connect Nibe

Zerofy connects to the myUplink cloud API with your myUplink login (OAuth) and shows the heat pump as a Space Heating and a Hot Water Tank device; Autopilot controls the hot-water boost.

  1. Register the heat pump in myUplink and make sure it is online.
  2. Activate a myUplink Premium subscription for the system.
  3. In Zerofy, add Nibe and log in with your myUplink credentials.
  4. Enable Autopilot (Solar or Smart mode) for the Hot Water Tank.

Good to know: Without a myUplink Premium subscription the API access does not work. Zerofy currently steers only the hot-water boost; flow-temperature control is not available yet.

3. Turn on Autopilot

In Zerofy, open your Nibe heat pump, turn on Autopilot and choose Solar – or Smart to also use dynamic tariffs and forecasts. Set the priority, activation threshold and minimum runtime.

Dynamic tariffs

Zerofy can also run your Nibe heat pump on dynamic electricity prices (EPEX Spot or Nord Pool, e.g. Tibber or aWATTar) or on a fixed time-of-use tariff. Smart mode combines those prices with forecasts of your household consumption and your SMA solar production.

About SMA and Nibe

SMA – German inverter maker based in Niestetal near Kassel. Homes typically have a Sunny Boy (single-phase) or Sunny Tripower (three-phase) string inverter, or a Sunny Boy Smart Energy (3.6–6 kW) or Sunny Tripower Smart Energy hybrid inverter with the SMA Home Storage battery (3.28 kWh modules, up to 16.4 kWh). Monitoring app: SMA Sunny Portal / SMA Energy app.

Nibe – NIBE is a Swedish heat pump maker (Markaryd). Homeowners typically have a ground-source S1155/S1255, an air-to-water heat pump with an SMO or VVM indoor unit, or an exhaust-air F730/F750, all connected to the myUplink cloud. Products: S1155, S1255, S2125 with SMO S40 / VVM S320, F-series (F1155, F1255, F2120, F730, F750).
